Greenfest

Our Australian Habitat

Australia is one of seventeen countries described as being 'megadiverse'. This group of countries support more than 70% of the biological diversity on earth.

Australia is home to between 600,000 and 700,000 species, many of which are endemic, that is they are found nowhere else in the world. These include, for example, 84% of our plant species, 83% of mammals, and 45% of birds.

Australia's biodiversity - the plants, animals, micro-organisms and their ecosystems - is threatened from the impacts of human activities. Since European settlement, more than 50 species of Australian animals and over 60 species of Australian plants are known to have become extinct.

Refer to the federal Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts database for listings and details of threatened flora and fauna

Greenfest has a non-profit constitution, any profits made will be reinvested into the festival development, green education and  protection of natural habitats.

Our focus for 2008-10 is habitat protection in Australia's Northern regions.

The wild country of Australia is unique in supporting a significant portion of all life on Earth, we can protect it by becoming informed and making decisions about the future of this land together. Let your local members for city, state and federal government know you care about these issues and support practical community action.
