Queensland firm offers green building solution

THE “green revolution” has spawned a number of environmentally friendly developments in the building industry.

These innovations have allowed builders to make an important contribution to saving the planet.

Progress, however, has been slow and generally confined to the philosophy of individual builders as the traditionally conservative industry grapples with the realities of caring for the environment.

A Queensland company, Eco System Homes, has taken the “green revolution” to its next logical step by developing a fully integrated, affordable green homes package tailored to meet the needs of today’s environmentally savvy market.

The unique package, to be launched, appropriately, on World Environment Day (June 5), is expected to appeal to builders looking for a solution to the green building phenomenon.

The launch will coincide with the start of Green Fest in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 7.

General Manager of Eco System Homes, Jeff Hilditch, said company representatives would be delighted to meet home buyers and builders in the Sustainable Concepts marquee near the food tents.

Mr Hilditch said his company’s designs for green homes were rated from 6-star to 8.5-star and were now available in Queensland.

“We have had a mindset in Australia that homes need to have four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large two-car garage; however, we are finding that with smaller families and more people living alone or with their partners, there is a shift in demand to more efficient and more affordable housing,” said Mr Hilditch.

“The market is also crying out for environmentally appropriate housing – people want to make a contribution to saving the planet,” he said.

“We took all these issues into consideration when we developed the Eco Systems Homes package.

“The current government building code is now 5-star and we know it is set to increase in the near future.

“Eco System Homes currently have energy ratings ranging from 6-star to 8.5-star, all for the same price as conventional homes,” he said.

Mr Hilditch said the new green homes were designed to reduce the need for artificial cooling and heating, therefore reducing energy bills. They were also designed in a modular fashion, making it simple to extend as the need arises.

“Eco System Homes are not kit homes, it is a system that gives local licensed builders access to training, a national call centre, interior designers, sustainability consultants, energy assessors and the services of our own architect Mark Buczynski,” he said.

“Eco System Homes are also cheaper to build,” said Mr Hilditch.

Eco System Homes are already under construction in Hervey Bay and Toogoom with large estates to begin this year in Bowen (50 homes) and Maryborough (260 homes).
